Executive Summary
Exactech has gained US clearance to sell what it claims is the first pre-formed, antibiotic-containing cement hip spacer in the US. Used in two-stage revision hip surgery, the InterSpace hip spacer allows for consistent and uniform release of antibiotic into the local infected area. It also offers patients the opportunity for improved function after the first stage treatment and better rehabilitation after the definitive second-stage operation, said the Gainesville, Florida firm. "This new device eliminates costly additional operating time and replaces the inconsistent quality of the intra-operatively hand-fashioned devices currently being used," said Exactech's CEO, Bill Petty.
