Executive Summary
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), the total number of kidney failure patients on dialysis increased by 72% in the period 1994-2003. Evidence suggests that greater access to, and general improvements in, dialysis treatment are the cause of this rise, along with an increased prevalence of kidney failure amongst elderly patients, said Dr Vanita Jassal, gerontological nephrologist and expert advisor to the CIHI.
