Legislation supporting the use of patient navigators to help patients navigate the healthcare system is now awaiting President Bush's signature. The Patient Navigator Outreach and Chronic Disease Prevention Act passed the House on June 13 and the Senate on June 22. It would provide $25m in grants over five years for hospitals and other healthcare providers to recruit and train persons who will help underserved populations negotiate the complex and sometimes confusing healthcare system.
