Ireland has launched a month-long meningitis campaign, to run the whole of February, aimed at increasing awareness and surveillance of the disease. Ireland's Health Protection Surveillance Centre recorded 262 cases of bacterial in 2004 (provisional figures), compared with 311 in 2003. Of the 2004 bacterial meningitis notifications, five were type C; in 2000, these numbered 139.
