Executive Summary
Foetal ultrasound is helping to detect a significant number of future urological malformations, such as dilatation of the kidneys (hydronephrosis) and of the urethra. These can then be investigated and treated before symptoms appear. Hydronephrosis is highly prevalent in Spain, affecting one in every 1,000-3,000 newborns, according to Spanish urology association (AEU) head of paediatric urology, Dr Andres Gomez Fraile. Around a third of cases require surgery.
