Executive Summary

Abbott Diabetes Care (Alameda, California) has just received 510(k) clearance for its FreeStyle Freedom blood glucose measuring device, for consumer use. The test only takes five seconds to complete, and is virtually pain-free, using the smallest blood sample size (0.3 micro litres) of any test on the market, says the company. The firm hopes that the device will encourage diabetes sufferers to monitor their blood glucose levels more frequently. It will be available as of April.
