Ireland has announced groundbreaking plans to screen all people engaged in sport for sudden cardiac death (SCD), as part of a strategy to stem the relatively high incidence of the condition in the young. SCD (or sudden arrest) is not a heart attack (infarction), but involves the abrupt loss of heart function, often in cases that presented no symptoms of coronary heart disease (CHD).
