This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Singapore's initiatives to strengthen its biomedical sector (BMS) in 2005 have paid off with strong growth in the sector. The medical technology output lags behind pharmaceuticals, which accounted for 88% of the total growth, but grew 10.6% to reach S$2.1bn (US$1.2bn); medtech also claimed 62% of the 10,200 jobs in the BMS manufacturing sector. The next phase of development, to take place during 2006-2010, will focus on strengthening capabilities in translational and clinical research and on boosting the competitiveness of technology being developed in the fields of cardiovascular, imaging, vision, diagnostic and instrumentation.
