The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, also known as the Stem Cell Institute (San Francisco, California), has appointed Richard Murphy as interim president, effective September 1. The neuroscientist was a member of the CIRM board until July 1, when he retired as president and CEO of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in La Jolla, California. Since the retirement in April of Dr Zach Hall, whom Dr Murphy replaces, Lori Hoffman has been acting president - he remains as chief finance and administrative officer. Dr Murphy joins as the institute prepares to invest $225m in R&D facilities in 2008.
