Executive Summary
Edwards Lifesciences PVT, a subsidiary of cardiovascular disease specialist Edwards Lifesciences, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against CoreValve, of Irvine, California, a privately-owned heart valve company. The suit, filed in the District Court of Dusseldorf, seeks compensation from CoreValve for allegedly infringing a patent related to a transcatheter heart valve technology used in Edwards' Sapien Transcatheter aortic heart valve, which is currently in clinical trials in the US, Canada and Europe. "Edwards recognises and respects intellectual property rights and has a duty to protect them. We believe CoreValve is infringing on these patents and should compensate Edwards accordingly," said an Edwards spokesperson.
