Executive Summary
Scotland is considering screening all hospital patients for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Over the next 12 months, three NHS trusts (Ayrshire & Arran, Grampian and Western Isles) will pilot the testing of all patients across the full range of facility and demographic settings, as part of Scotland's third healthcare-associated infections action plan, which came into force on April 1. The screening pilot has been given extra investment totalling £7m ($14m). Screening would be introduced across Scotland in 2009-10.
