Smaller size of Abbott's Xience V

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Abbott has CE marked a 2.25mm version of its Xience V drug-eluting stent (DES). The smaller size of the everolimus-eluting device should broaden the range of patients that can be treated, as it can be used to prop open smaller vessels than would previously have been candidates for stenting. The Abbott Park, Illinois firm claims that 30-40% of coronary artery disease lesions occur in vessels equal to or less than 2.5mm in diameter. In addition to the 2.25mm size, Xience V is available in stent diameters of 2.5, 2.75, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0mm. Abbott is to launch the new form of the stent in Europe, as well as in selected countries in Asia and Latin America, immediately.
