Executive Summary
The US FDA has approved a smaller version of Cypher, Cordis's sirolimus-eluting stent. The new 2.25mm device is indicated for treatment of coronary blockages in small vessels. In recent months, the agency has approved two other drug-eluting stents (DESs) for the treatment of small vessel disease: Boston Scientific's Taxus Liberté Atom and Taxus Express Atom, both of which elute paclitaxel. Cypher is widely regarded as safer than the Taxus family of devices.
