Executive Summary
Spain's La Fe hospital, in Valencia, has performed the world's most ambitious face transplantation, by also transplanting the lower jaw and the tongue. A 30-strong surgical team, led by Dr Pedro Cavadas, operated on the 43-year-old oral cancer patient for almost 16 hours. It is the world's eighth face transplant; another two Spanish hospitals – Seville's Virgen del Rocío and Barcelona's Val d'Hebrn – have been given approval to perform the procedure, and await matching donors.
