Executive Summary
Italy has improved its "epidemiology and applied research" (ERA) database with the introduction of a new online application, known as ERA Web. The aim of this new application (which uses open-source software) is to help map mortality rates and causes and other health indicators. The system promises to provide healthcare analysts with a "modern, easily-updated technology that offers a precise panorama of the healthcare situation and needs at national, regional and provincial level". The enhanced ERA system, co-developed by the health ministry, Rome's Tor Vergata University and the national statistics institute, ISTAT, among others, was presented at the Epidemiology and Applied Research Congress, which took place in Rome on June 11.
