Executive Summary
Boston Scientific and Medtronic have prolonged their rivalry in the cardiovascular market after the two firms took each other to court last week. Medtronic has sued Boston and fellow competitor Abbott Laboratories over an alleged patent infringement for a stent designed to treat blood vessels. Medtronic is seeking damages and an injunction of the infringing devices. One day prior to this suit, Boston had filed against Medtronic, claiming that ten patents covering grafts to repair aneurysms had been infringed. In May this year, Boston was ordered to pay Medtronic $250m in damages for infringing patents related to balloon catheters and stent delivery systems (see Clinica No 1308, p 3).
