Three African countries have more than halved malaria mortality in recent years by implementing a range of best-practice interventions, including "advances in disease surveillance", according to the World Health Organization. Its World Malaria Report 2008 highlights the successes of Eritrea, Rwanda and Sao Tome & Principe between 2000 and 2006-07, and the "significant improvements observed in other African countries and areas", notably Madagascar, Zambia and Zanzibar (Tanzania).
