Draft SGR Repeal Bill Reworks Doc Incentives, Includes Imaging/ECG Appropriateness Criteria

The Senate Finance Committee and House Ways & Means Committee circulated a discussion draft to replace the maligned Medicare sustainable growth rate formula for physician pay with a system that freezes base payments but offers value-based incentives. The bill also calls for mandatory use of appropriateness criteria for advanced imaging and electrocardiogram, and prior authorization in some cases.

Clinical Lab And DME Payments Face Cuts Under Obama Budget

The 2014 federal budget request submitted by President Obama April 10 includes proposals to cut clinical lab services and to limit Medicaid reimbursement for durable medical equipment, among other cuts that would affect the medtech industry.

A Government Accountability Office report recommends CMS take direct measures to reduce Medicare spending on self-referred imaging services, but the Medicare agency is not on board with most of GAO’s ideas.
