Cochlear implant patients have an elevated risk of contracting bacterial meningitis, according to a Sept. 16 Medical Device Alert from UK's Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. According to the MDA, "congenital abnormalities to hearing organs may predispose this population to middle ear infections, and the presence of stimulation electrodes passed into the cochlea may present a route for the spread of infection."
