Executive Summary

April 29 New England Journal of Medicine study finds higher rate of complications associated with laparoscopic-surgery group versus open-surgery in inguinal hernia cases at 14 VA medical centers. Authored by University of Utah's Leigh Neumayer, MD, et al., the study also demonstrated a higher recurrence rate of primary hernias after laparoscopic repair, compared with the open-mesh procedure.
