House Commerce Committee Chairman Thomas Bliley (R-Va.) and Commerce/Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) urge the HHS Office of the Inspector General to investigate the practice of clinical trial subject recruitment over the Internet. In a July 19 letter to the HHS Inspector General June Gibbs Brown, the legislators cite recent media reports as well as the IG's move to include the issue in two ongoing studies into FDA oversight of investigators.
