Investigational device exemption approval allows firm to begin U.S. clinical trials for its VariLift expandable spinal cage system, the privately held firm reports June 1. The cylindrical titanium stand-alone cage currently is marketed in Europe and comes in three sizes (11 mm to 15 mm), which can expand to 12.5 mm to 17 mm. The trial seeks to determine whether the system promotes natural lordosis for treatment of degenerative disk disease
