Executive Summary
Complications resulting from laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis for the correction of nearsightedness are "rare," with the rate of complications apparently decreasing as surgeons gain experience with the procedure, according to a study published in the January issue of Ophthalmology. Complications occur in about 5% of cases but they "rarely" lead to substantial loss of vision or to visual acuity below 20/40. Findings are based on a study of 1,062 eyes in which the incidence of complications during surgery decreased from 3.1% in the first three months to 0.7% during the last nine months of the study
