LaserSight: St. Louis firm issues first license for its laser scanning technology to Winter Park, Florida-based Photon Data, Inc. Under terms of the license, PDI will pay LaserSight a 7.5% royalty fee based on gross sales of PDI's Scan-190 SmartScan laser. LaserSight was issued U.S. Patent No. 5,520,679 covering "Ophthalmic Surgery Method Using Non-Contact Scanning Laser" in June. Used primarily in photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures, the patent covers use of a small diameter beam with low energy and high repetition to reshape the cornea. The company says it "is currently in discussion with other manufacturers regarding licensing agreements"...
