Executive Summary
Coherent acquires 37% stake in privately held Silver Spring, Maryland-based Infrared Fiber Systems. Under terms of the deal, which includes the purchase by Coherent and IFS of most of Westinghouse Electric Corp.'s common stock in IFS, Coherent gains "certain exclusive distribution rights" to IFS fibers for erbium lasers, Coherent states in a Feb. 15 release. Clinical studies using Coherent erbium lasers and IFS fibers currently are under way. "Promising opportunities include a wide range of ophthalmic microsurgical applications, delicate dissection of brain and nerve tissue, bone sculpting in middle ear surgery as well as higher power dental and orthopedic applications," Coherent says
