Enhancements to Search and Search Filters

We’ve added new search and filter features to the publication websites. Using these search and filter capabilities allows you to find exactly what you need, when you need it. Here is what you need to know to get the most from these enhancements.

Search with More Precision and Flexibility

  • Exact match or literal searching is supported. Simply use double quotes around a word or phrase to retrieve an exact match. Examples:
    • Searching for generic drug will retrieve results containing generic and drug, but they might be separated by other words, or, as a result of stemming the results might contain words with the same stem, such as generics, or general. However, searching for “generic drug” will retrieve only results containing that exact phrase.
    • You may also use Boolean operators between separate quoted terms. If you want to find all articles containing the exact words “generic” and “drug”, but not necessarily adjacent to each other or in that order, you can search for “generic” AND “drug”
  • Wild card searching is supported. Using an asterisk (*) at the beginning of a word or part of a word will allow you to find matches that include additional letters, as represented by the asterisk. For example, gen* would find articles containing genetic, generic, or general, while *gen would find articles containing Amgen or oxygen.
  • Nested search is supported. You can use parentheses to nest your Boolean search. For example, Pfizer AND (Novartis OR Merck) finds results containing Novartis and Pfizer, Merck and Pfizer, or all three.
  • Create multiple saved searches or alerts in a row from the Search Results page. You can now create more than one saved search or alert in a row from the Search results page. This is especially useful if you want to set up a series of alerts to track multiple topics or companies.

Improved Filtering

  • Selecting more than one choice within the Subject, Therapy Area, Device Market Area or Region facet now retrieves all articles tagged with any of the choices. This means you only need to do one search if you want to find all results tagged with at least one of the tags you have selected within a facet. For example, if you want to search for all articles tagged Europe as well as all tagged Asia Pacific, you can check both options in the filter. Previously, checking both retrieved only articles tagged with both Europe and Asia Pacific, a much smaller set.
  • The full list of tagged countries now appears in the region filters under each region. This allows you to find articles tagged to a specific country. To collapse the list, use the [-] control.
  • The date filter is more user friendly. The date filter now accepts months and days in either 1- or 2- digit format, and an error message displays if the user enters an incorrectly formatted date.

Note that dates must be entered in a day/month/year format.

  • Tags used for region and subject filters have been updated and standardized. Overlapping tags have been consolidated and extraneous tags removed. Previously published articles and saved searches and alerts impacted by the changes have been seamlessly updated. It is now easier and more intuitive to filter by subject or region.
