Interventional Radiology debuts as Cook's ninth strategic business unit on Feb. 2. At its inception, the radiology business "is the fourth largest business unit of Cook" with well over $100 million in sales, according to Dan Sirota, global business leader-Cook Interventional Radiology. The IR unit comprises approximately 12 product families, including venous, liver access, biopsy and drainage devices, formerly housed in Cook's Peripheral Vascular unit. The new division is "an opportunity for us to provide more focus on the product development side of our business within an area that we see as a tremendous growth area," Sirota explained. Privately held Cook's other business units include Urology, Aortic Intervention, Critical Care, Surgery and Women's Health, which was created in 2008 (1"The Gray Sheet" May 15, 2006, p. 11)

Balloon for induced labor

Cook Medical women's health division is marketing its Cervical Ripening Balloon as an alternative to drug-based cervical dilation prior to induced labor. The device, launched in May, is comprised of two silicone balloons inflated on either side of the cervix. Cook created its women's health unit in May 2006 (1"The Gray Sheet" May 15, 2006, p. 11)...
