Medtronic announced on 19 October its robotic-assisted system Hugo has gained regulatory approvals in Japan, the third largest robotics market worldwide, and general surgery approval in the EU and Canada. A surgeon offered perspectives on Hugo versus Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci surgical robot.
Dallara is joining Medtronic from Honeywell, where she served as CEO of the conglomerate’s Connected Enterprise. The company also promoted Mike Marinaro to the president of Medtronic’s surgical robotics unit and Kweli Thomson to lead the cardiac rhythm management unit.
The company originally expected the first-in-human trial of the soft-tissue robotic surgery system to begin in late 2022 and reach the market by 2023, but the company now expects those trials to begin in 2024.
