NIH Pumps $3m Into Cell-Based Biological Pacemakers

Executive Summary

Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute have developed a minimally invasive approach to introduce the embryonic transcription factor T-box 18 (TBX18), which can convert cardiomyocytes into pacemaker cells. The $3m grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is intended to finish the preclinical research necessary to obtain US FDA approval to begin trials in human.
