Medtech had the highest number of patent applications filed with the European Patent Office in 2012, beating pharma and biotech by a long shot. Moreover, the EPO annual report showed that over a ten-year period between 2003 and 2012, this number increased year on year while pharma and biotech remained relatively stagnant.
