The European Commission has announced the EU's largest ever investment under its Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), member states having pooled €8.1bn ($9.9bn) to fund research and innovation. Some 10% of the total budget or €819m is earmarked for healthcare, the second-largest allocation behind IT and Communication.
