Executive Summary
Una O’Brien has been appointed permanent secretary of the UK’s Department of Health (DH). Currently director general of policy and strategy at the DH, she will replace Sir Hugh Taylor, who retired in July 2010. Richard Douglas will continue as acting permanent secretary until Ms O’Brien takes up her post at the end of this month. Cabinet secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell said that her health service experience will be “vital” in helping to deliver the planned health service reforms, and “leading the DH through the challenges ahead”.
