This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Haemocell (UK) has introduced its System 350 low volume, autologous blood processing unit, which features a patented filtration system to wash and separate collected blood. The device is suitable for collecting blood lost during or after surgery. Processing is completed, with blood ready for reinfusion, within minutes, the company claims. Prepacked, disposable intra-operative collection, filter, and post-operative collection sets are available. The post-operative set converts from intra-operative to post-operative drainage for orthopaedic procedures. Haemocell estimates that over 3.25 million operations will be performed in the UK this year. While 2.4 million units of blood are collected in the UK every year, demand increases 4% annually.
