The Seattle, Washington-based Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) has developed a rapid HIV test for use in developing countries. The HIV Dipstick can detect HIV-1 and 2 and can be performed in rural health centres with limited facilities, says PATH. The test, which costs just $0.50, can produce results in less than 30 minutes. It is already distributed in Thailand, Indonesia, Argentina, India and Zimbabwe and will soon be available in China and Cameroon.
