Spain's Basque Country is to launch a breast screening programme which aims to reduce the number of sufferers by a quarter by 2010. The campaign is targeting women aged 50 to 64 and hopes to carry out double-projection mammographies every two years. To reduce significantly the number of sufferers of breast cancer, Inaki Azkuna, the region's head of health, claims the campaign will require 70% participation among the 180,000 targeted women. Incidence of breast cancer in the region is 70 per 100,000 people, causing around 300 deaths a year, says a report in Diario Medico.
