This article was originally published in Clinica
Executive Summary
A total of 8,986 transluminal balloon angioplasty procedures were performed in NHS hospitals in England in 1993-4, according to a written parliamentary reply. For the whole of the UK, estimates published in a new Clinica report indicate that 10,800 procedures were carried out, 16.5% more than the year before. Stents now account for 20% of PTCAs, says Cardiovascular Implants: A World Market Review (to be published later this year). PTCA procedures are forecast to grow to over 21,000 by the end of the decade, with stents increasing their share to 40%. The UK stent market is predicted to grow to almost $20 million by 2000 from $5 million in 1995.
