Executive Summary
The first totally laparoscopic aortic bypass in the US has been successfully carried out in California, with the replacement of over six inches of a 67-year-old patient's aorta. The procedure, carried out by Dr Carlos Gracia of the California Laparoscopic Institute, and Dr Yves Dion of the University of Laval (Quebec City), was performed through six half-inch incisions. This compares with laparoscopically-assisted aortic bypass procedures, which still require a two-to-four-inch incision as well as several smaller entries.
