Every year more than 300,000 pacemakers are implanted worldwide and the largest share is in Europe, according to data from the Pacemaker Registration System. The average rate of implants has increased to 300 per million people per year worldwide. However, the actual incidence varies widely - double the average in Belgium, 500/M in Germany and France. In eastern Europe the implant rate is nearer 100 per million.
