Obese mice found to have fat genes

US researchers looking for an obesity mutation in mice have discovered a link to insulin processing. Scientists from the Jackson Laboratory, Maine, say an obesity-producing gene, dubbed fat, impairs insulin processing. Writing in Nature Genetics (June), they say that a single mutation in the gene on mouse chromosome 8 prevents the animals synthesising carboxypeptidase E, an enzyme needed for processing insulin.
