Executive Summary
The world market for implantable cardioverter defibrillators is projected by US analysts at UBS Securities to double from nearly $500 million in 1994 to over $1,000 million by 1998. Guidant, Medtronic and Ventritex will continue to compete for increased market share through technological advances. However, acceptance of new, expensive technologies could be jeopardised if they fail to demonstrate a cost benefit over cheaper antiarrhythmic drug therapy, caution the analysts.
