More pressure is being put on the Italian government to regulate reagent rental plans. It is a matter of financial urgency, according to a report just published by the state accountancy department, since reagent rental plans are among the six major causes of waste in the Italian national health service. The report, which is being examined by the Treasury, calls for legislation to ensure reagent rental plans are treated like all other contracts - subject to authorisation and competition rules.
