We have the technology to rebuild you - artificial limb research

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Research by a European team could lead to a generation of artificial limbs and other products which can be controlled directly by the central nervous system. The researchers have completed the first stage of a three-year, EU-funded project to produce a minute implant which connects nerves directly to external devices, such as artificial limbs. The aim of the INTER (Intelligent Neural Interface) project is to produce a connector containing a perforated silicon dice through which regenerating nerves can pass and microelectronics to record sensory signals and stimulate motor nerves.
