The Simon Nitinol device is a thermal shape-memory vena cava filter designed to prevent pulmonary embolisms. Nitinol says that pulmonary embolism results in approximately 125,000 to 150,000 deaths annually in the US and represented a worldwide market in 1995 worth $53 million.
