Incorrect diagnosis or delay in reaching the correct one represent 25% of complaints against general practitioners in the UK, according to a report by the Medical Defence Union. The MDU, which defends doctors against complaints and allegations of negligence, analysed 737 complaints against 620 GPs over a year in Manchester. Over 90% of complaints were dismissed or resolved, while 6.5% of doctors accused faced disciplinary action. Inadequate management/training accounted for 14% of complaints, and delay or failure to refer, 13%.
