Nearly half of the 62 different types of replacement hips being used by the UK NHS have not been properly tested, and no one knows how long they will last, says the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York. An Effective Health Care Bulletin from the centre says that the cheaper, standard, cemented implants, such as the Charnley and the Stanmore, have been the most thoroughly evaluated and have shown the lowest long-term failure rates over 10-20 years follow-up.
