The microbiology department at Lisbon's Medical Faculty has developed a PCR test to measure HIV-2 viral load. The number of HIV-2 cases in Portugal is relatively high compared with the rest of Europe. Head researcher Perpetua Gomes explains that studies of this kind have been carried out for HIV-1, but not for HIV-2 because of the low incidence of the virus, reports the Jornal de Noticias. The Portuguese results were presented at the Vancouver AIDS conference in Canada in July.
