Between 200 million and 300 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B and one million people die annually from the disease. Up to 80% of all liver cancers are caused by the infection, said Dr Sigrid Ley from the German Green Cross at a conference in Bonn. In Germany, some 1,500 people die annually from advanced hepatitis, cirrhosis or liver cancer, reports Arzte Zeitung. Around 50,000 new cases develop in Germany each year.
