The UK national screening committee held its first meeting earlier this month. The committee was set up to advise the Department of Health and the NHS executive board on the appropriateness of implementation, development and, where necessary, the cessation of screening programmes for a range of illnesses. Chaired by Kenneth Calman, chief medical officer at the Department of Health, it will also make recommendations on the need for further research in specific areas.
