Of 3.95 million live births in the US in 1994, ultrasound was involved in 2.4 million cases. Data compiled by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that electrofoetal monitoring was the most common obstetric procedure, being reported for 3.15 million births. Amniocentesis was carried out in 123,188 cases.
