Executive Summary

A group of scientists from the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia has discovered a gene that may predispose people to diabetes. The susceptibility gene, mapped to chromosome 2q, acts early in the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, an autoimmune disease, writes Dr Grant Morahan in Science (June 20th). The group has filed a preliminary patent for preclinical diagnosis, he told Clinica.
